How to calculate Bitcoin mining profitability

Every Bitcoin mining calculator — including a simple bit mining calculator — is built on one equation: profit = revenue − electricity cost. Getting an accurate answer means getting each side of that equation right, so it is worth understanding what drives the two halves before you trust any output.

The profitability formula explained

Mining revenue is your slice of what the whole network earns: your hashrate divided by network hashrate, multiplied by 144 daily blocks, the 3.125 BTC reward and the BTC price. Power cost is watts × 24 ÷ 1,000 × electricity rate. Subtracting that cost from revenue gives daily profit; multiplying by 30.44 estimates a month.

There are 144 blocks mined per day on average (one every ten minutes), and since the April 2024 halving each block pays a 3.125 BTC reward. Your share of those blocks equals your hashrate divided by the total network hashrate — currently around 780 EH/s. Multiply the BTC you earn by the market price and you have gross daily revenue. Because the network hashrate sits in the denominator, revenue falls whenever other miners add machines, even if nothing about your own rig changes.

Electricity is the dominant running cost, and the calculation is straightforward:

electricity cost = watts × 24 hours × kWh rate ÷ 1000

A 3,500 W miner running all day draws 84 kWh. At $0.072/kWh that is $6.05 per day; at a home German tariff near $0.35/kWh the same machine would cost over $29 per day and never turn a profit.
